On a sunny Thursday afternoon I found myself in a meeting at The Westmoreland Museum of American Art. After the meeting, I went to see the current exhibit "Rooted In Tradition: Art Quilts from the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum". While reading the introduction panel, I noticed that Judith Trager was the curator for this particular show. Amazingly enough, Judith is one of the artists we represent and my wife had just been to see her in her Colorado home a few days before. This show chronicles the history of the art quilt movement from 1980 through the present and brings the quilt decisively from the bed to the wall. The quilts in this collection reflect the change from the traditional craft of quilt making based on the repeated block to the free spirited, sometimes-edgy art form of today. The exhibition features 48 quilts and works by the artists in this collection represent the best in American art quilts today. Curated by Judith Trager, an internationally known quilt artist and lecturer, Rooted in Tradition is the first exhibition to tackle the art quilt historically. The Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum, located in Golden, Colorado, celebrates, educates, and preserves the art and history of American quilts and quilt making, past and present.
Naturally, these quilts are out of reach for most of us and therefore it is really great that we have her potholders and placemats available in our gallery as well as on the new website (or will have them on the site very soon).
