Bird On A Hot Tin CanGreensboro, NC artist Paul Sumner has been creating in wood for more than two decades. His work has evolved from jewelry boxes and furniture into mixed media fish, birds and dogs. This "Mellow Mint Bird #3" is handcarved from basswood and painted with 6 coats of gesso. Sumner then carves, paints, sands and waxes the body until it achieves an old world lustre. Glass eyes, an old spool of thread and an antique Mellow Mints tin complete the sculpture.
Sumner's most recent works involve combining metal and wood. As an avid antique collector, Paul has an abundance of old tins and other objects to add unexpected visual treats to all his current work.
